Yuko MATSUOKA graduated from International Christian University majoring in Japanese History and, upon graduation, became a full-time interpreter at an organization belonging to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. She started free-lancing as a conference interpreter in 1972 and joined the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) in 1983. She specializes in the legal field, especially intellectual property. She has been active in training interpreters and has taught at Sophia University in Tokyo and the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in California.
She obtained an M.A. in International Political Studies with Distinction from MIIS in 1996. Before taking over her late husband's publishing business, she was an able assistant to him in planning, editing and marketing. She also runs a company specializing in interpreting, Pro'Net, Ltd.
At present, she often gives lectures and writes essays on her work both as president of Say-zan-sha and as translator of the Harry Potter series.
She has also been active as volunteer interpreter for the ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Association of Japan, and took over her late husband's activities in support of ALS patients and their families.
She heads the committee that is preparing to host the international ALS conference in Japan in 2006.
